Staying up to date with your vaccines is important to your overall health. Getting the recommended vaccines protects you from serious diseases and from passing them to the people around you.

Understanding vaccines

Vaccines are especially important for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those on dialysis who have a higher risk of illness. The recommended vaccines for people with CKD or on dialysis are:

  • Influenza vaccine each year to protect against flu
  • COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) to protect against COVID-19
  • Pneumonia vaccines to protect against pneumonia (lung infection)
  • Hepatitis B vaccines to protect against hepatitis B liver disease
  • Tdap vaccine to protect against whooping cough and tetanus
  • Zoster vaccine to protect against shingles if you are 50 years or older

You may require additional vaccines that are not listed above depending on other factors. Your care team can help you determine the vaccinations you need.

Solid organ transplant

If you’ve had a solid organ transplant such as a kidney, lung, liver, or heart, talk to your care team before getting any kind of vaccines.
